When I visited this magnificent new velodrome in Pruszkow for the first time, I immediately realised that the whole cycling movement had received an extremely valuable gift.
The Polish Federation has not only achieved the fantastic outcome of a visionary and courageous policy, but has also sent out a very strong signal to all National Federations, who have not been able to or not wanted to have such a facility.
We are all aware that a velodrome built in accordance with the most modern criteria gives great possibilities to athletes who benefit from it for their training, and I am certain that the result of the Polish Federation’s investment – whose riders have already shown themselves capable on several occasions, of giving excellent performances at World Cups – will soon be presented to the world’s public.
On behalf of the UCI, I would firstly like to congratulate the President, Wojciech Walkiewicz for taking this initiative which will enable Poland to join the group of countries currently at the forefront of world cycling. Thank you, Mr President!
In this respect, the event that we are about to experience together here in Pruszkow will be the initial phase in a period of growth that this strategic choice has made possible. The best world’s specialists will come together in the various races which we will have the privilege of watching, and we can expect a very high level sporting spectacle.
Finally, I would like to wish the best of luck and every success to all competitors and I would also like to thank the sports and political authorities, sponsors and volunteers who have contributed to the organisation of these 2009 UCI Track World Championships. I would also like to invite you to share with us the emotions of the days that lie ahead.
